Until a couple of weeks ago, the last time I drew a ship was in 1991 for a report about the Titanic in my history class. Although that came out pretty good for a seventh grader, I was tasked to make a poster for the State College Community Theatre that had a better theme to it.
I ended up basing my drawing on an old photo of the Queen Mary ship. First I sketched out the layout of the poster on a piece of drawing paper for an idea of how to set up the composition of the whole thing, then worked it out over several steps:
I drew it in graphite and went over it in watercolour and gouache. It came out pretty well.
The next step was to add the text, so I decided to go with a very classic look, sort of reminiscent of the 1930s, using old style fonts. I wanted it to look like something from a touring brochure of that era.
